Ribble electric bikes – what do they offer?

Electric bikes are one of the fastest-growing markets in cycling. They are gradually establishing themselves as a viable alternative to other forms of transport for short to medium distance journeys. However, even in such a short space of time, the e-bikes that we see online and instore are a far cry from those early examples. Ribble electric bikes are a prime example of how far technology has advanced. With their market-leading weights and advanced electric motor systems, they can as easily be ridden with the assistance switched on or off. But what are the benefits of an e-bike?

The appeal of electric bikes is fairly obvious, the extra kick of assistance as you pedal makes short work of any troublesome climbs. But it’s not a question of simply pressing a button and being propelled up a climb the likes of Alpe d’Huez at a pace that would make any World Tour rider struggle to stay on your wheel. Far from it. Pedal assisted e-bikes are all about applying a smooth and controlled flow of electrical power assistance to the pedals.

  • People from all walks of life who are looking to take up cycling as a means of transportation, leisure riding or simply as a way to get fit. The beauty of the electric bike means that you can build up stamina and fitness at a pace to suit you. Without the need to restrict your rides to flatter terrain to avoid the lung-searing effort of steep climbs.
  • As an aid to recovery from serious illness or injury. When it is necessary to take it easy at first and build up fitness progressively.
  • A means to prolong a love of cycling when the body is less willing or a pre-existing medical condition restricts how much effort the body can put out.

Ribble Electric Bikes

The start of 2019 saw Ribble unveil our first-ever electric bike, the Endurance SL e. At the time of its launch the lightest e-road bike range worldwide. Thanks to the LEVEL 5 carbon integrated handlebar system it also offered fully hidden cables. A first for any e-bike procuced by a UK brand.

Since the launch of the Endurance SL e new models have been added to our e-bike range and more are planned for the future. E-bikes are here to stay! What if you are considering purchasing an e-bike? Which should you choose and why?

We hope this guide helps you to understand the differences and features of the various models of Ribble electric bikes.

Tech features

Let’s start with brief run down of the key features of the Ribble electric bike range.

Weight

Whether the bike is manufactured from carbon or aluminium all of the Ribble electric bikes share the same overriding feature – weight. When our R&D team researched e-bikes it was clear that many of the contemporary e-bikes were in the 20-30 kg range. What this meant in real-world terms is that it was almost impossible to ride the bikes without assistance. So we went a different way, in designing the lightest range of electric bikes on the market today.

Electric motor system

To be able to offer such a lightweight range of e-bikes it is necessary to have a lightweight yet powerful electric motor to provide the pedal-assistance. Which is why we chose the MAHLE Ebikemotion X35 which weighs in at just 3.5kg for the entire system! The X35 system delivers up to 250W of smooth electric power assistance as you pedal.

Control Button

All model’s of Ribble electric bikes have a control button situated either on the top tube or handlebars. With a single press of this easy to use button you activate the system. There are then 3 power setting to choose from, low, medium and high assistance. Each level offers a set percentage of assistance so that you can choose the one that you prefer to suit the terrain, surface or conditions. LED’s built into the buttons display the current level of assistance as well as indicating how much battery remains via a traffic light system. White indicates 75 to 100% and then it cycles through Green, Amber, Red and Red flash.

Superior aesthetics

Another benefit of choosing the X35 motor system is that we have been able to create some beautiful bikes that at first glance are indiscernible from standard bikes. In fact, many people cannot tell them apart from their non-electric counterparts. This is largely down to the battery being discreetly hidden within the downtube of the frame. Plus, with the motor also being discreetly built into the rear hub it makes for a very neat solution to big, ugly and heavy e-bikes.

Endurance SLe

The SL e helps Tony Rees keep pace on the climbs with son Jack of Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling.

The Endurance SL e is the high-performance road bike option. It utilises the same frameset as the Endurance SL series of performance road frames. Constructed from high-grade Toray T800/T1000 carbon fibre enhances the torsional stiffness and power transfer. resulting in our lightest and fastest electric bike. In keeping with the philosophy of the SL series, the frames aerodynamic tube profiles make it extremely aero efficient. With improved drag reduction this translates into less effort for more speed.

Another advantage to the design of the frameset is the dropped seatstays. These add more compliance and by this we mean that it absorbs more of the vibrations from rough surfaces than a standard frame.

Due to the minimalist design of the Ebikemotion X35 propulsion system, which weighs in at only 3.5kg, builds from as little as 11kg are possible. This makes it one of the lightest range of e-bikes available worldwide.

Features
  • A frameset constructed from Toray T800/T1000 carbon fibres with an EPS inner core system offers class-leading stiffness and power transfer.
  • A road optimised endurance geometry for all day in the saddle comfort which can also be optimised to provide a slightly more aggressive position. As per the riders preference.
  • Intended only to be used on paved surfaces and as a consequence is only available with road specific groupsets. These groupsets all feature two chainrings at the front and the cassette is configurable through our BikeBuilder function. This customisation allows you to select the best gear range that suits you.
  • A wide tyre clearance of up to 30mm without mudguards or 25mm with full coverage mudguards fitted. Expanding the contact patch with the road improves comfort while enhancing traction and grip.
  • There are no pannier rack mounts.
  • A dropped road handlebar provides multiple hand positions for comfort and efficiency when climbing, on the flats, and descending.
  • Discreet mudguard mounts enable the fitting of full-coverage mudguards for improved wet weather protection.

CGR AL e

An e-bike version of our best-selling and popular all-terrain CGR range. The letters CGR stand for Cross/Gravel/Road which is indicative of how versatile this all-rounder is. Where it differs from say the hybrid AL e is in the geometry and handlebars. The CGR’s geometry is more akin to a road bike, but with a few adjustments to improve control and stability when riding off-road.

Drop handlebars rather than flat bars give the rider multiple hand positions to choose from and are recommended for longer duration rides. They allow the rider to change position between the tops for climbing, the hoods for cruising on the flats and the drops for descents.

  8. Do you ship ebikes to Canada?
If so, what is normally the time from order to shipping?
    Thanks 🙂

  9. Hi Dave,
Thanks for getting in touch, we did but are not currently able to ship e-bikes to Canada we’re sorry to say. The effects of Brexit has made an already complicated shipping procedure almost impossibly complex and extremely expensive. We are investigating alternative options which will allow us to ship e-bikes to North America again, however, this looks like being a process that may take a good while to solve.
    Best Regards
