Ribble electric bikes – what do they offer?

The electric bike market continues to grow, with current estimations placing e-bike ownership at 300m worldwide by 2023. In fact, the e-bike is rapidly establishing itself as a viable alternative to other forms of transport for short to medium distance journeys. However, even in a seemingly short space of time, e-bikes, as we know them today, are a far cry from early examples. Ribble’s electric bikes range is indicative of just how far technology has advanced. So what benefits do they offer?

Electric bikes are full of possibilities, they take you places you wouldn’t ordinarily go, or extend your rides beyond where you would be able to reach under your own steam alone. Thanks, in no small part, to the boost of natural feeling power assistance that they deliver to each pedal stroke. It’s not, however, quite as simple as pressing a button to be propelled up a climb the like of Alpe D’Huez at speeds that would have a World Tour rider struggling to hold your wheel.

Far from it. All of our range of award-winning e-bikes pedal-assisted electric bikes or pedelecs for short. As a result, they deliver a smooth and controlled flow of electrical power assistance to each pedal stroke. However, unless you are spinning those pedals around you are going nowhere fast!

Who rides e-bikes?

In short everybody, everyone from beginners to experienced road or off-road cyclists can discover a new way of riding thanks to e-bikes.

  • People from all walks of life, who may be looking to take up cycling as a means of transportation, leisure riding, or to get fit. Electric bikes allow you to build up stamina and fitness at a pace to suit you. As a result of the extra boost of assistance, you needn’t restrict your rides to avoid hillier terrain in the fledgling stages of your new hobby.
  • As an aid to recovery after serious illness or injury. Riding an e-bike lets you take it easy at first and build up fitness progressively. A seriously impressive tech feature of our e-bikes is the ability to set heart rate limits. When a heart rate limit is reached the assistance automatically kicks in. Clever stuff!
  • Anyone looking to prolong their love for cycling but finds themselves being dropped on hilly group rides. On an e-bike oyu are very likely to be the one waiting for the group at the summit.
  • They allow riders to extend their road or off-road rides, amp up the fun factor, ride faster and further than ever before.

Ribble Electric Bikes

The start of 2019 saw Ribble unveil our first-ever electric bike, the Endurance SL e. At the time of its launch the lightest e-road bike range worldwide. Thanks to the LEVEL 5 carbon integrated handlebar system it also offered fully hidden cables. A first for any e-bike produced by a UK brand.

Since the launch of the Endurance SL e, new models have been added to our e-bike range and more are planned for the future. E-bikes are here to stay! But what if you are considering purchasing an e-bike? Which should you choose and why?

We hope this guide helps you to understand the differences and features of the various models of Ribble electric bikes.

Tech features

Let’s start with a brief rundown of the key features of the Ribble electric bike range.

Weight

Whether the bike is manufactured from carbon or aluminium, our electric bikes have one thing in common – weight. When researching what it is that our e-bikes should offer, we discovered that many contemporary e-bikes were often in the 20-30 kg range. As a result, the bike would perform as expected when assistance was being used. But it would simply be too heavy to be ridden without assistance. This meant that switching off assistance to preserve battery range or simply riding under your own steam when you felt like it was impossible. So we went a different way and designed the lightest range of electric bikes on the market today.

Electric motor system

To deliver the lightest e-bikes possible it was crucial to find a motor system that was both compact and powerful. Reliability also had to be a top priority which is why we selected the MAHLE Ebikemotion X35 pedal-assist motor system. Weighing in at just 3.5kg for the entire system it delivers up to 250W of smooth assistance to each pedal stroke.

Control Button

Each model in the Ribble e-bike lineup is equipped with a control button. Depending upon the style of bike, this control unit is located on the top tube or handlebars. A single press of the button is enough to activate the system. The button allows you to choose from 3 assistance modes; low, medium, and high. Each assistance mode offers a set percentage of the total power available, so you can choose the one to suit the terrain. LED’s set within the control unit indicates the assistance level that is currently selected. Additionally, the available battery charge is also displayed via a simple traffic light system. White indicates 75 to 100% and then it cycles through Green, Amber, Red, and Red flash.

Superior aesthetics

Another benefit of choosing the X35 motor system is its incredibly minimalist design. Which has enabled us to create a range of ‘stealth’ e-bikes that at first glance look like any ordinary bike. In fact, many people cannot tell them apart from their non-electric counterparts. This is achieved by way of the battery being hidden within the frame’s downtube and the motor being situated in the rear hub. All in all, it makes for a very neat solution to big, ugly and heavy e-bikes.

Endurance Electric Road Bikes

Everything you love about cycling and more! Our cutting-edge electric road bikes are amongst the lightest to be found worldwide. They provide a welcome boost of natural feeling power assistance to help you keep up on hilly group rides or smash that bucket list climb that you’ve always dreamed of conquering.

Endurance SL e

The SL e helps Tony Rees keep pace on the climbs with son Jack of Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling.

The Endurance SL e is the high-performance road bike option of our e-bike range. In terms of frame design, it’s almost identical to the Endurance SL. It shares the same carbon construction of a high-grade blend of Toray T800/T1000 carbon fibre. This combination enhances both torsional stiffness and power transfer, resulting in the SL e being our lightest and fastest electric bike. In keeping with the philosophy of the SL series, the frames aerodynamic tube shapes make it extremely aero efficient. With improved drag reduction this translates into less effort for more speed.

Builds start from as little as 10.5kg which makes it one of the lightest range of e-bikes available worldwide.

Features

  • A frameset constructed from Toray T800/T1000 carbon fibres with an EPS inner core system offers class-leading stiffness and power transfer.
  • A road optimised endurance geometry for all day in the saddle comfort which can also be optimised to provide a slightly more aggressive position. As per the riders preference.
  • Intended only to be used on paved surfaces and as a consequence is only available with road specific groupsets. These groupsets all feature two chainrings at the front and the cassette is configurable through our BikeBuilder function. This customisation allows you to select the best gear range that suits you.
  • A wide tyre clearance of up to 30mm without mudguards or 25mm with full coverage mudguards fitted. Expanding the contact patch with the road improves comfort while enhancing traction and grip.
  • There are no pannier rack mounts.
  • A dropped road handlebar provides multiple hand positions for comfort and efficiency when climbing, on the flats, and descending.
  • Discreet mudguard mounts enable the fitting of full-coverage mudguards for improved wet weather protection.

Endurance AL Disc

Developed from the Endurance SL e, this alloy option offers many of the advantages of its sibling and makes them more accessible to everyone. Like the SL e, it’s light, fast, and agile with a battery range that opens up the road to everyone.

  • Material – The frameset is contructed from heat-treated 6061-T6 Alloy and finished with seamless welds, making the frame both stiff and incredibly robust.
  • Weight – Builds start at approximately 12kg, with our 105 equipped ‘recommended build’ weighing in at just 13kg.
  • Geometry – Like its carbon sibling, the performance geometry provides a comfortable and efficient riding position for longer days in the saddle. With enough adjustability to suit the rider seeking a more aggressive riding position.
  • Control Button – The easy to use, top-tube mounted control button enables the power assistance to be selected whilst on the move. Additionally, it also indicates the amount of battery charge remaining.
  • Gearing – The Endurance SL e is a throughbred road going machine and as a result is only specc’d with road gear systems. Think two chainrings at the front and a close spread of gears at the rear in the region of 11-25 through to 11-34T. All of which is configurable in BikeBuilder, letting you select your gear options based on terrain or levels of fitness.
  • Tyre Clearance – Clearance for 32mm tyres to offers a wider contact contact patch with the road for improved comfort, traction, and grip in all conditions. It should be noted that this is reduced to 25mm if mudguards are fitted.
  • Luggage – Similarly to the SL e, there are no pannier rack mounts.
  • Handlebars – Standard road drop bars provide multiple hand positions for comfort and efficiency when climbing, on the flats, and descending.
  • Versatility– Discreet mudguard mounts enable the fitting of full-coverage mudguards for improved wet weather protection.

Hybrid Electric Bikes

A hybrid bike as its name suggests is a mix of two bikes. It takes the more upright riding position of an MTB and combines it with the extra efficiency of road bike componentry. As a result, the hybrid bike is fast and comfortable on the roads whilst offering confidence inspired handling for light off-road excursions. For these reasons alone, the hybrid bike is by far the most popular choice for beginners and urban leisure cyclists.

However, you’re not just limited to the road. Not by a long chalk. Fit a Hybrid bike with slick tyres and it fairly flies on paved surfaces. However, opt for a tyre with a little tread and before you know it, you will be exploring towpaths and bridleways. With a gear range wide enough to cope with steep inclines and light off-road adventures, the hybrid bike is a highly capable all-rounder.

  8. Do you ship ebikes to Canada?
If so, what is normally the time from order to shipping?
    Thanks 🙂

  9. Hi Dave,
Thanks for getting in touch, we did but are not currently able to ship e-bikes to Canada we’re sorry to say. The effects of Brexit has made an already complicated shipping procedure almost impossibly complex and extremely expensive. We are investigating alternative options which will allow us to ship e-bikes to North America again, however, this looks like being a process that may take a good while to solve.

  10. Hi Paul,
Thanks for getting in touch, It’s damned near impossible to offer you an answer to your question as there are simply too many variables that will affect the final figure. To name but a few; route profile, rider fitness, rider weight, tyre pressure, tyre width, temperature, level of assistance used, how often each level is required and for how long. All of these will directly affect how far you will be able to ride on a full charge. For instance, I can inform you that on a bike test of the SL e on the lowest assistance setting we rode 52.59 miles and the battery was still at 75% capacity. We rode the same route at the highest setting and achieved 72 miles before it was fully depleted. We state that you should expect on average 60 miles but this will decrease if the route is particularly hilly and the highest level is used almost exclusively.

  11. I’m interested in an e bike but wonder what kind of warranty is offered for the electric motor and battery. Your website only seems to talk about the warranty for the frame and forks

    Regards

    Geoff

  12. Hi Geoffrey,
Thanks for getting in touch. Whenever we talk about the warranty on our website, we state that the frame and forks are guaranteed against manufacturing defects for a period of 3-years and all other parts are covered by the standard manufacturer’s warranty. MAHLE components are covered against defects or a lack of conformity for a period of 2-years, valid from the date of purchase.
    I hope this helps
